Year after year the holiday season jumps upon us sooner and sooner. Just as soon as we’ve washed the forks and put away the leftovers, it’s time for the rest of the winter holidays. There is more food, more sweet drinks, more cookies, pies, feasting, and food-oriented gifts. Beginning with Halloween through New Years your kids’ teeth are exposed to goody after goody.
While it is impossible to keep your child from enjoying the treats that have become a part of the season’s fabric, with a few simple steps you can help keep cavities at bay and let them enjoy the season’s confections.
It helps to keep in mind what treats they are eating, according to the AAPD, a more tooth-friendly sweet treat is dark chocolate, which isn’t sticky or acidic. It contains antioxidants like polyphenols and flavonoids, which may actually stop the unhealthy bacteria from sticking to the teeth, prevent gum infections, and fight tooth decay. When possible it is best to avoid the chewy and sticky sweets as they stick to the teeth, and between them! Also notable is drinking plenty of water, instead of sugary beverages to help wash away food and particles. Daily brushing, flossing and of course keeping those regular checkups are also vital. The Greatest Smile on Earth wishes everyone an excellent holiday season! If you find you are in need of pediatric dental care or orthodontics, we would love to welcome you to the family!
