For new parents we follow the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry - "first visit by the first birthday." Fully recognizing the cooperation level and attention span of a 1 year old, Dr. Tom will perform a cursory exam, demonstrate proper oral hygiene techniques, and discuss your child's eating,
feeding, and oral habits as they pertain to good oral health and the development of a normal dentition and occlusal harmony. A professional cleaning is usually unwarranted at this age.
We recommend a complete dental examination including a professional prophylaxis (cleaning) and a topical fluoride application at 2 1/2 to 3 years of age. This gives us the opportunity to establish good dental habits at an early age, and correct any existing problems before they become serious and result in permanent damage.
As a parent you can play an important role in preparing your child for this visit. It is important to demonstrate positive attitudes and encouraging language when describing the dental visit. Avoid using technical terminology unfamiliar to your child to describe dental procedures. Children’s books and videos can assist you in communication by describing the dental visit utilizing age appropriate language and visualizations. Be positive! Describe the first visit as an adventure, much like a visit to the zoo.
During the first visit we allow extra time for your child to become acquainted with our staff and to inspect our facilities. It is normal for many children to be afraid or anxious in a new environment. Most fears are fears of the unknown. We try to eliminate these fears by proceeding at a reasonable pace and explaining all procedures in terminology that your child can understand.
We encourage parents to accompany their child into the treatment bay during this initial visit. This allows you to ask questions and discuss your concerns with the doctor and staff during the examination. In addition it enables you to clarify any misconceptions or questions your child may later have.
Your child’s brushing skills will be evaluated and oral hygiene instruction will be given to correct any deficiencies. A thorough dental and orthodontic examination will be performed by the doctor in addition to a professional cleaning and topical fluoride application. X-rays are not a routine part of our examination procedure, and are only administered when further information is necessary to complete an accurate diagnosis.
No further treatment is completed at this visit unless your child is experiencing a problem of an emergency nature. Again, this policy is designed to allow your child adequate time to feel comfortable in our office before more definitive treatment is accomplished. At the conclusion of this visit Dr. Tom will review with you our findings and all treatment recommendations.
